200 families seek PM's help over airport's noise pollution

SUVARNABHUMI: -- Representatives from the Khehanakhon 2 community in Soi Lat Krabang 36 Saturday sent a letter asking for Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont's help to solve the problem of noise from Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The letter, signed by 200 families, stated that residents lived near the new international airport had in the past suffered flooding. Now they are also being affected by aircraft noise, which is said to be between 80 and 90 decibels.

According to the Pollution Control Department, noise levels should not exceed 70 decibels.

The letter said that many residents had developed hearing problems while many families said their elderly members were shocked and shaken by the sudden tremors and noise from aircraft.

They urged the government to consider their plight and provide medical staff to care for the community's mental health.

The letter also indicated that some time ago, an army officer who claimed to work at the prime minister's residence had come to take a complaint filed by the residents and collect oil-contaminated rainwater for testing.

Having receiving no response since that visit, the residents decided to follow through with the case by filing a direct appeal to the premier, they said.

Read years ago about an American who suffered from aircraft

noise because the nearest airport had changed approach paths

and incoming planes started flying over his house.

He tried all the reasonable methods to remedy this (local

politicians and the local courts) but nothing got him anywhere.

I forget the name of his city but let's say it was Chicago.

He had a large house , with a large roof.

On the side of his roof facing the incoming planes he painted

(in huge white letters) WELCOME TO CINCINNATI.

It did not take long for pilots and crew , dealing with confused

passengers , to pass the word that this approach was best

avoided.
