More than 1,200 houses and buildings were affected and more than 70 people died or were injured by rainstorms and lightning in the first four months of 2016, according to Keo Vy, Cabinet director and a spokesman for the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM). There were 46 storms in 16 provinces in the first quarter of the year, causing 1,278 houses, buildings, schools, pagodas and markets to be damaged, either slightly or completely.

“There were 233 houses completely destroyed, 1,022 houses were opened in the roof or wall, seven schools had their roofs damaged and another 16 administrative buildings and markets were slightly damaged, while 15 hectares of rubber plantations were damaged in Rattanakiri province’s O’Chum district,” Mr. Vy said. Four people were killed in rainstorms and 47 injured, while eight people were killed and 13 injured by lightning, he added.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology released a statement warning people to be careful during storms, which could occur between now and next Wednesday. “From May 4 to 11, at some municipalities and provinces, the rain will fall continuously, so please be careful with thunderstorms, lightning and storms which happen during this time of year,” the announcement said.
