Education Min holds seminar on raising education quality in Deep South

YALA, 12 May 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Education has convened with related officials in Yala province about strategies to enhance the quality of education personnel in the southern border provinces.

Deputy Education Minister Gen Surachet Chaiwong presided over a seminar which was attended by Yala Governor Doldej Padhanarath, heads of government units under the Education Ministry’s supervision and local teachers. He gave his policy address to the participants and was briefed on the progress of education development in the southernmost region.

As the seminar’s objective was to increase the efficiency of local education personnel, Gen Surachet stated that the improvement of education standards is necessary as education is the foundation and a basic element of human development. He insisted that the Education Ministry has drawn up several policies in support of the move and concrete results have been evident, especially in the southern border provinces.

This seminar also featured exhibitions and lectures related to important factors in raising education quality, including policies and guidelines, professional advancement for educators, teachers and education personnel enhancement based on mission and functional areas as majors, and distance learning channels.

"The Ministry of Education has convened with related officials in Yala province about strategies to enhance the quality of education personnel in the southern border provinces."

The first step for the south and the rest of Thailand is to fire every teacher and administrator. Then have them reapply for their positions and hire to fill those positions based solely on the individual's ability alone to perform the tasks associated with the job description... Not their ascribed status based on family ties, paying the "right" people off to attain their positions, how long they have held the job, etc.

In other words....Enhancing the quality of education personnel throughout Thailand ain't never gonna happen.

Would they have the time when prayers are to be made 5 times a day?

Islam is a major religion in Switzerland. Here is one of the seven educational directives from the Department of Education, Canton of Zurich (2007) offering reasonable accommodation for Muslim pupils1:

The children of strict practicing Muslims who observe the duty to pray in the mosque are to be exempted from classes at the request of their parents. The children concerned must make up for the work missed in class. The religious requirement to take part in these prayers applies to male Muslims from the age of puberty onwards. Prayers last for between half an hour and one hour. As they take place over the midday period, the impact on lessons is only marginal. As Friday prayers take place only in large prayer rooms or in mosques – of which there are only a small number in the Canton Zurich – the question of dispensation is unlikely to affect more than a small number of pupils.

In South Thailand 95% of the population is Muslim. It would be reasonable that their educational guidelines would differ from Buddhist practices in the North. And therein is one of the underlying conflicts in the South – forced integration of the Muslim culture into Thai-Buddhist culture and tradition.
