BANGKOK, 13 May 2016 (NNT) – The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has approved an ASEAN treaty on medical equipment.

Deputy Chairman of the NLA Surachai Liengboonlertchai made known ahead of the latest assembly meeting that the body has begun its cooperation with the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) to field questions from the public on the public referendum for the draft charter. Up to 170 NLA members from 9 provinces have agreed to take part in the effort to ensure the public is well informed on the vote.

The meeting then considered and approved an ASEAN treaty on medical equipment forwarded to it by the Cabinet. Minister of Public Health Piyasakol Sakolsathayathorn explained the agreement, saying it sets standards for inspecting medical equipment, their safety, their categorization, documentation and monitoring of medical equipment on the market. He stated that the treaty would make the sale of medical equipment across ASEAN easier as the bloc would share standards.

The NLA suggested in its approval that the government also create appropriate regulations and delineate responsible agencies in support of the treaty.
