Paris terror suspect Abdeslam refuses to speak before French court

The prime surviving suspect linked to last November’s Paris terror attacks has appeared in a French court for the first time – and said nothing.

The hearing in Paris, which was closed to the public, was the first occasion for investigators to question him.

But Salah Abdeslam – under formal investigation on terrorism and murder charges after his extradition from Belgium – refused to speak.

“His promise was to speak about what he did one day, and that’s not today. The important thing is that it will happen one day. People can say what they want, that it (the judicial process) isn’t quick enough, but he is the one responsible for the timing, for the explanation and for answering the judges’ questions. And the important thing is that he does it one day,” said Frank Berton, a lawyer representing the suspect.

Abdeslam is thought to have played a key role in planning the attacks, and to have driven bombers to the Stade de France.

“What the victims want is not for him to tell them things, it’s to show him what he’s done, so he realises the scope of their suffering, and that this is not about vengeance but justice,” said Gerard Chemla, a lawyer representing about 75 of the victims, mostly from the Bataclan music venue.

The 26-year-old is being held in a high-security jail at Fleury-Mérogis, south of Paris, in solitary confinement under video surveillance.

His lawyer says the suspect has complained of being spied on, suggesting that the conditions do not encourage him to cooperate with the judicial authorities.

The Belgian-born Frenchman was Europe’s most wanted fugitive until he was captured in Brussels in March after a manhunt lasting four months.

The Paris attacks carried out by ISIL militants killed 130 people and injured nearly 370.

He should stay quiet. At least for now. After he is elected to public office - which as a hero to 90% of muslim youths he certainly will be, he can enjoy diplomatic immunity or other immunity from prosecution. FWIW I will never vote for scrotes like Abdeslam, he is not a true European in the classic sense(no matter how popular and fashionable he is with the progressive left), although going forward a decade or 2 most "Europeans" will think and look just like him. He is the future.

France does not have the death penalty it was abolished in 1981 the Constitution was also amended to exclude capital punishment. Also they have several human rights treaties that exclude the use of Capital Punishment. As a member of the EU a Nation cannot have Capital Punishment on their statutes.

In France a person accused of a crime has the right to silence. Not unusual in such a high profile case that he has been advised to exercise that right.

Abdeslam is fortunate he has been extradited to a civilised Nation that will follow the procedure of Law.

If the State deprives a person of their liberty (something the French has great respect for - "Liberté, égalité, fraternité") the persons safety becomes the responsibility of the State. So I suspect he will be, quite rightly, in protective custody.

You seem to have similarities to Abdeslam. You both want to teach others a 'lesson' through violence.

suggesting that the conditions do not encourage him to cooperate with the judicial authorities.

you have destroyed,,, yes,,, but i have rights,,, tell that to the surviving families.

So if you are accused of a crime which country / forum would you select to have those accusations against you tested in. Three choices:

1. France

2. North Korea

3. Thai Visa Poll

Or in other words....... there is no advantage to me in providing any information to the prosecutions case against me.
