"Never been to Khaosan Road and don't want to go. I have a fat wallet but I never tell any women about it, because I can get lucky with them without needing to mention it, and needless to say don't have to pay for the experience."

So you're so successful with women and such a 'Hansum Man' you feel the need to come onto Thai Visa to tell everyone about it? rolleyes.gif

"checkin99 does beer lao dark 99 baht before 8.30 and the food is good. I think it's the oldest surviving nightclub in Bkk"

It's about 5 years old if that, not even close to the oldest nightclub in Nana/Soi 4 area! It's normally empty and the beers are way overpriced some of the most expensive in Bangkok, you wouldn't catch me in there for all the tea in China!

It was sold a few years ago that's all, changed it's name from the cococabana in the 1970's but it's still the same location and always been a club since 1960. If there is anything older lets hear about it

would that pre-date the Nana Disco, which is now operating as EQ Bar?

Yes it was there before the nana hotel and the manhattan check the pics

Beats the hell out of tatty a go go's and overpriced hotel spots

Beats the hell out of tatty a go go's and overpriced hotel spots

The heart and soul of Bkk was ripped out about 20 years ago.

Chinese shophouses, no more, wooden Thai style house, no more, klongside living,no more.

Petchaburi Rd, no more.

Issan Darling, no more.

Dara Cafe, no more.

Washington Square, no more.

Prakhanong Cinema, no more.

All being replaced by bloody shopping malls and condos.

I have seen the future of Bkk, it aint pretty, its called Orchard Rd Singapore.

A totally soulless place devoid of character.

For a look into the past, head to Sam Rong, get there quick before the bloody skytrain gets there and destroys the place.

Cities are like sharks. If they don't keep moving forwards, they die.

The best thing about Bangkok is that it's constantly reinventing itself. Why cling to the past?

I dont see cities such as Quebec, Montreal, New York, London, Paris etc reinventing themselves, and to this day they still prosper.

Maybe we should tear down Buck House and turn it into another shopping mall.

Lose your history and heritage, lose your soul.

You forgot Villa cafe, issan holiday, Issan happy home, Tankay issan, new bride cafe and a few more. Yes you are right it's turning into Macdonalds and Starbucks land with all the charm and character of a car park.

Is that one where older people go to get down...,

..., and then get back up again ?

wai.gif

No, it's where older people go because they have good taste in music, and to avoid the aural assault you get in practically every bar throughout Thailand (at least farang bars).

The whole of Bangkok is retro. It's full of middle-aged and elderly fat western men who think they're Austin Powers and that the girls actually like them for their sexy appearance and magnetic personality. Just go to any nightclub in Bangkok and you can see such guys busting their moves on the dancefloor with women young enough to be their granddaughters.

Yeah, ain't it great. What's the matter bunky, some old sod took your girl?

Re-invention is fine as far as it goes, but I think it depends what you bring with you when you go forward.

Many so called hipsters seem to have embraced much that is retro with them...., it's all very well using slogans and cliches..., substance and authentic value rather than change for changes sake.

Sharks indeed..., some are safer for humans than others grasshopper.

Not sure if it was there before the Nana, but then I first visited in 1967, and both were there. Used to be able to rent the rooms upstairs for the night; fully equipped of course.

I went to Checkin 99 last night..., it's an honest authentic 'establishment' with very, very good quality entertainment. The whole place is operated by decent hard working people..., all of the staff. Seriously how many night time entertainment places within Bkk can you say that about ?
In fact I'm thinking there's an opportunity for a retro music bar....., within Bkk....., maybe not so 'overt' as in soi 7 beer garden wink.png

It's a bit like a care home lounge with a band.

..., ha ha..., unlike the alternatives - which seem to be a clubs full of don't carers(careless?), no homers/homeless lounge lizard homies, with no bands, just DJ's n canned, digitised bubble gum for the ears ?

I doubt your grandparent's generation thought much of your music, either.

Re consumption of a lot of beer at one time; The record is held by Andre the Giant of wrestlng fame who consumed 119 12 oz beers in 6 hours. That's one beer every 3 minutes - try it some time but take a taxi home.

No doubt.., goes without saying..., you've got similar ahead of you if you make it that far.

I could do a thirty pack..but probably more like 10 hours.....Used to do 1 beer every inning during baseball games...then I realized how fast some of those games were with Randy Johnson on the mound...The actually were doing contests on drinking 3 large in CM a few years ago, but that likely has been suppressed.

That's probably true too, but the big difference is the music our grandparents hated is still selling today, 40 or 50 years later. I doubt much of the fodder that masquerades as music these days will be remembered in ten years time.

i think most places there play music so old you can call it retro....or how about gold.

Obviously you're way out of touch. Have you been away from Thailand for a long time. Today most clubs play hip hop or trance or the like.

You must be very proud.

Maybe you need to broaden your experience of BKK. Actually the vast majority of clubs in BKK are frequented by only Thais. It is THAIland, don't you know?

Poster Tywais pic from 1969, you can just see copacabana (checkinn99) on the left between Suk soi 5 and 7. Up the road you can see the sign for the Manhattan hotel on soi 15, built 1968 I think. The Nana hotel was put up around '64? The area has hardly changed at all has it whistling.gif
