Electoral body hopes politicians will help foster public understanding

BANGKOK, 23 May 2016 (NNT) – The Election Commission (EC) hopes that its recent meeting with political parties will help the public referendum go smoothly and that politicians will help the public understand the draft.

Election Commission (EC) Chairman, Supachai Somcharoen expressed his appreciation to 50 political parties participating in the recent meeting which was also joined by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC), and cabinet members.

At the meeting Mr Supachai said all political parties had been well informed of their rights under Article 7 and Article 61 of the interim constitution. The two articles allow politicians to express their thoughts and opinions on the draft charter, based on factual information and without distortion.

He said the all parties had expressed their support and their willingness to cooperate with the EC.

Lastly, the chairman asserted that the electoral body would remain unbiased and would always be impartial throughout its term in office.

All political parties are also well informed of their rights under Article 44 - which is to say it trumps all other Articles of the Interim Constitution.

Exactly how the NCPO intends it to be.

The Junta now likely realizes the referendum will be labeled as flawed by international bodies. It appears the flunkies have been instructed to soften and equivocate. But the fact of the repressive election law remains.
