ANKARA: -- Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel has told Turkey it must fulfill all the conditions set by the EU before its citizens get visa free travel to the bloc.

Turkey’s anti-terror laws remain a key area of dispute, and the German leader demanded changes to prevent the current deal with Ankara from being delayed.

Speaking on the sidelines of the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul Merkel said: “We’ve often spoken about these issues, but there remain questions. And we will monitor developments closely, but our questions have still not been answered.”

Merkel also voiced deep concern over the Turkish parliament’s recent decision to strip MPs of their immunity.

Critics fear the law could be used to sideline the pro-Kurdish opposition.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, meanwhile, called on Europe to do more to help Syrian refugees in his country.

“The existing system is unfortunately insufficient to meet urgent humanitarian needs. It’s not capable of providing the support people need. What we also see is that only a few states are shouldering this burden,’‘ he said.

President Erdogan has asked Europe to welcome more of the three million refugees currently living in camps in Turkey.

EU figures show that only around 180 Syrians have been resettled from Turkey since Brussels struck a deal with Ankara in March.

Elections to the European Parliament take place all 5 years. In 2019 you will have a chance to vote out whomever you dislike.

The positions of the Commissioners are indeed haggled over by the (democratically elected) representatives of the member states. After the member states agree on all positions they must seek the approval of the European Parliament. This procedure is only indirectly democratic and should be changed in that way that the EP elects the complete commission.

The Council of the EU consists of democratically elected ministers.

The same applies for the European Council (in regard of the Heads of States).

To call for more (direct) democracy in the EU-institutions is certainly right, to call the EU "undemocratic" is plain wrong.

Then there is no visa free travel for Turks (and Merkel's refugee deal is probably gone, too).

The Schengen Arrangement is under the Council of the Ministers but I do not know whether unanimity is required for a decision on visa free travel of non-member states. If that is the case, just one veto would be enough.

Giving the Turks visa free travel is a bad idea, even entertaining them to join Europe is an even worse idea, 90% of the country is classed as been in Asia so they are not even Europeans. 75 million Turks waiting to come in to Europe.....outstanding..Not.

It would probably be cheaper to put a flotilla of ships across the sea in international waters to stop the migrants/refugees coming over than it would be to strike a deal with Turkey.
