Cabinet nods to Thai film promotion strategy

BANGKOK, 25 May 2016 (NNT) – The Cabinet has given the green light to the third phase of the strategy to support the Thai film industry, hoping to maximize revenue from the sector.

After the weekly Cabinet meeting, Culture Minister Weera Rojpotchanarat disclosed that approval has been given to Phase 3 of the film promotion strategy, which will be effective from 2017-2021. According to the Culture Ministry’s proposal, the strategy contains five key objectives, namely the development of professionals in the Thai film industry, fostering of growth in the industry, protection of related intellectual property, establishment of investment cooperation with foreign partners and enhancement of the industry’s potential.

The implementation of the strategy will be jointly supervised by five ministries, consisting of the Ministries of Culture, Commerce, Tourism and Sports, Information and Communication Technology, and Foreign Affairs.

Mr Weera said the two previous phases of the strategy were met with great success. According to statistics from 2014, the net worth of the film industry in Thailand was as high as 400 billion baht.

Five ministers to oversea a film strategy for films largely made in Thai language and only marketable in Thailand! - I guess noone has anything better to do. The workshops and meetings must be huge!

I remember the time when an idiot, a senator i think, suggested LoS could make money by exporting soaps to neighbouring countries. rolleyes.gif

Shows the mentality, imagine what the neighbours would think watching what goes on in these shows ?

Might be an eye opener for some and for others just confirm what they already suspect !

I think they just closed the film production school at Mahidol this year. The same for Silpakorn a few years ago. Thammasat still teaches with real film cameras, instead of digital. That pretty much leaves private, for profit Bangkok University's program as the only film production school in the country. Looks like a lot of money coming their way.

400 billion baht? Really?

Why only marketable in Thailand Jimbo..? A lot of what is on TV here is brought & language dubbed from China---so I take it they have the same taste in common (servant girls unrequited love for the master...ect etc) China is a huge market.

Bollywood exports everywhere ------& if the Americans can sell "Days of our lives" Dubbed in 16 different languages, I should think anything has a chance.
