BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Public Health has warned members of the public to take precautions against pink eye disease or conjunctivitis which is usually widespread during the rainy season.

Public Health Minister Piyasakon Sakonsatayathorn said that several diseases, especially pink eye, can easily spread out and the rainy season is ideal for the spread of the disease.

According to the Diseases Control Department, over 47,000 people were inflected with pink eye during the first five months of this year with the highest incidence being reported in Amnart Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Mae Hong Son, Saraburi and Si Sa Ket. More cases are expected during the rainy season.

The minister said that all health offices had been instructed to advise people in their areas of jurisdiction to protect themselves against the pink eye disease especially in schools, child centres, shopping malls or offices.

Children should be warned not to frolic or swim in ponds or water catchment areas because the water is dirty or contaminated and they may be infected with pick eye virus or bacteria.

People who are infected should not wear contact lens and should not share towels, glasses or eye drops with the other people to prevent the disease from spreading. They should quickly wash their eyes with clean water when their eyes are exposed to dirty water.

MOPH warns public on conjunctivitis outbreak

NONTHABURI, 30 May 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) has warned the general public to be cautious of the conjunctivitis outbreak with 50,000 patients confirmed patients during the past 5 months, according to officials.

Minister of Public Health Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn has revealed that humid and wet weather conditions in the rainy season are factors that would help spread various diseases, with conjunctivitis in particular. Conjunctivitis is a communicable disease caused from a virus that grows well in humid conditions.

He revealed that a total of 47,410 conjunctivitis patients were found during 1 January to 23 May 2016 according to the Bureau of Epidemiology. Most cases were recorded in Amnat Chaoren, Ubon Ratchathani, Mae Hong Son, Sisaket, and Saraburi provinces. The number of patients is expected to rise throughout the rainy season.

The Department of Disease Control Director-General Amnuay Gajeena has said that the virus and bacteria causing the disease generally mutliplies in contaminated water or with dust; causing irritation, redness, excessive eye gum, swollen eyelids, pain, or the inability to withstand strong light in case of eye infection.

Individuals experiencing the symptoms are encouraged to wipe their eyes with clean and soft paper or cotton ball dipped in clean water, and to dispose of the wiper in enclosed litter box.

The use of handkerchiefs to wipe eyes should be avoided to lessen the likelyhood of contracting the virus. The general public with eye inflammation should also refrain from wearing contact lens until it heals, and refrain from sharing personal items such as clothes, towel, glasses, and sharing beds with others to prevent the disease from spreading. Wearing sunglasses are also reported to help prevent contraction of the disease.

The public are also strongly advised against sharing eye-drops as the virus could have already come into contact with the eyedropper’s opening.

Persons with severe eye pain, blurry vision, or unhealed redness after 7 days should seek medical attention at local healthcare facilities.

Pink Eye, ok I suppose the more usual Red Eye would be politically incorrect and likely carry a jail term, AA at least.

However, when I googled pink eye, the first hit was a link to conjunctivitis and when I googled red eye I did not get a linkt to the dicease.

Poor hand-washing is the main cause of the spread of pink eye. Most people I see washing their hands pour water over their hands and do not use soap. MOPH should urge people to use soap when washing their hands.

Pink Eye is am American term. I have never heard of it until recently. Conjunctivitis is what I have always known it as. (I guess the word " Conjunctivitis" is a bit on the hard side for most Americans hence the term Pink Eye.

"According to the Diseases Control Department, over 47,000 people were inflected with pink eye during the first five months of this year..."

Almost all of the first 5 months of 2016 was NOT the rainy season.

Therefore, the rainy season does not "cause" pink eye.

Logic. How does it work, 555
