DDPM instructs provinces to prepare for heavy rains

BANGKOK, 3 June 2016 (NNT) – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has instructed provinces in risk areas to prepare for heavy rains by providing 24-hour standby operations to actively respond to emergency situations.

DDPM Director-General Chatchai Promlert has revealed that some provinces in Thailand are expected to experience rains during this period of time. The provinces of risk include Chiang Rai, Phrae, Nan, Lamphun, Lampang, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Sukhothai, Kamphaengphet, Tak, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, Phang Nga, and Phuket.

All risk provinces have been appointed to prepare for flash floods and landslides due to the rain, and to monitor the situation 24-hours a day, and ensure that their equipment are ready to carry out immediate responses to emergency situations. Officials have been instructed that affected persons must be rescued or aided swiftly.

The DDPM director-general has said however that most of the precipitation will take place in areas below dams, which will not help add water reserves to the dams, thus extending a command to drought affected districts that they should continue to use water conservatively and plan their cultivation according to the dry climate to avoid damage from water shortages.

Flash flooding is nothing new for Thailand. I wonder how many provinces spent money in the dry season on flood prevention, mitigation? Same every year when the rainy season starts, flash floods and black-outs...

Well according to the govt met site,we should have had Thunderstorms everyday for the last 2 weeks,apart from a 5 min burst the other day,and some light drizzle one morning nothing,so i hope this time they are right.

Despite the DDPM DG “command”, one can only hope that the long-suffering rural folk of this drought-afflicted country will finally be able to look towards better times ahead.

You are probably wrong.

We had a thunderstorm nearly every day and some heavy rains. However you omitted to say where you are located, which would have made more sense to your post. As for Phichit province, we are adequately watered.
