'Spiderman' the not-so-smart phone thief arrested

BANGKOK: -- A thief who modelled himself on comic hero "Spiderman" has come crashing down to earth.

Somkhit (Khit) Taemgnam, 29, was arrested Monday. Using a rope he had swung down into many mobile phone shops in the Thonburi area of Bangkok stealing more than 200 phones reported Daily News. He often wore a Spiderman head scarf to conceal his face but police using much CCTV footage eventually managed to trace him to CB mansion in Bang Khun Thian where he was caught.......red handed.

A total of 31 brand new Samsung, Oppo and Vivo phones were taken into evidence though his haul since Songkran is reckoned to be over 200. He hit stores in Bang Kradee, Bang Bon, Petchkasem, Orm Yai and Bang Yai.

Somkhit told police he loved action movies and especially Spiderman so he kitted himself out like his hero in tight fitting clothes, cap and mask and swung into action through the ceilings of shops. He got between 3,500 and 7,000 for each of his stolen properties.

He said he left school at Por 6, the end of primary, and later went into construction but that didn't pay enough. So he decided to see if crime would pay the bills.

He was charged with theft during the hours of darkness.

He's in luck. Gaol is provided to those of selected professions free of charge.

It won't pay the bills, but he is guaranteed to be fed (usually fish head soup) for the next few years.

Yes. For some reason, it is classed as far more serious if it is done 'during the hours of darkness', and the sentence imposed will reflect that.

Yes there is a difference. Even in Western Australia for breaking into a house at night is far more serious than day time. Chances are the house is empty during the day but will have people inside at night which could escalate into violence. Hence the harsher penalties

Surely the mobile phone shops would have recorded the identifying numbers of their stock??? So if they passed the numbers of stolen phones on to local carriers, when you register your phone, or attempt to, the carrier will know you have a stolen device, and your ID details. Am I missing something here?

Of course, if you take the phone to a different country, the chances of being detected are slim.

So if they passed the numbers of stolen phones on to local carriers, when you register your phone, or attempt to, the carrier will know you have a stolen device, and your ID details. How am I going to get away with stealing all these phones? I know I will wear a disguise. Then when they look at the videos they will think Spider Man stole the phones.

And with many of them you can reprogram the IMEI anyway, which means blocking is useless.
