tried to search the web and only seemed to get 3 million sites "touting" their visa services. I am trying to find out how easy it is to get a visa to Oz for a Lao citizen

The situation is that I am on a UK passport and can therefore get an ETA online. MY g/f is from Lao which is not on the list for these.

We will be traveling with a new baby and are going to Australia to visit my parents that have a house there although they are not residents.

I live and work in Thailand and my g/f is a "housewife" here in Thailand as well.

Have done some reading at looks like it will be a total nightmare to get a visa for her even though we only want to go for about 10 to 14 days. Is this the case? Any suggestions much appreciated cos at the moment it seems easier to tell the folks to come here but I would quite like a holiday as I havent had one for over a year!

Click on this link and read the "Visitors" section.

You can also download Tourist Visa forms and read the Information Books on-line.

You will be applying for tourist visas as unsponsored applicants and will need to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family for the duration of your intended stay in Australia.

You should also provide a valid reason requiring you to return to Thailand.

There are numerous threads in the forum about tourist visas for Australia.

Have a good read and come back with any questions you may then have.

Currently it's a great time to visit Down Under, so good luck. :o

thanks for the info.

i had read the page that you gave me and was till no clearer to finding out if it was easy or not to get a visa for a Lao citizen for a short duration holiday.

I am eligible for an ETA and have no problems getting into australia (well the past dozen or so times i have been anyway)

As there is a AU$70 charge simply for the application of a tourist visa - which my g/f would need to apply for as she is ineligible for the ETA i was hoping someone would be able to shed some light on the likelyhood of it being granted.

most of the threads in the forum are about OZ residents getting visa's for their partners, not about a tourist from a european country wishing to visit with someone not on the ETA permited list. then again maybe I can't see the wood for the tree's and there is a thread that covers that very thing. if so do u know where it is :o

if your girlfriend if not on the eligible ETA list you will need to send in a paper application to the australian commission wherever you are. She needs to supply proof of savings and funds, letters from employer showing she will be returning to work, show any details of support that may be provided whilst in australia eg accommodation provided ( in your case it's your parents who aren't citizens, on the form they ask if they are oz residents ) or if someone is paying for her ( they need to show their proof of funds then)

Anyway, the short of it is, you need the supporting documents and to fill in the application which is on government website under the tourist visa section. It may take some weeks to process.

Good luck.

None of those who answer posted questions in the Australian section of this forum, work for the Australian Immigration Dept/Embassy, therefore no one is in a position to predict with any accuracy the likely outcome of a visa application.

We can only give advise based on our own personal experiences. There are no guarantees of success.

So long as you have sufficient funds to support yourselves then it shouldnt be too much hassle...you will both be applying as individuals so you will each need to show funds. Tell them you are travelling together, see if the applications can be processed together and get some supporting letters from your folks for accommadation etc...

cant predict but many couples from differing backgrounds come to Oz on TV's...so it is not impossible
