Bangkok Bank continues their ridiculous policy which make no sense. For those using the 800k in a Thai bank they insist it be in the account 4 months in advance (Immigration only requires 2 months). If it the full 800k has not been there for the 4 months, Bangkok bank freezes that amount from the account for the next 4 months (Immigration requires the 800k remain for 3 months and as mentioned, during the other 7 months it is not to fall below 400K). For those using the 65k monthly income method, they refuse to give the verification method unless you bring your account balance up to 800k and if done, most likely they would freeze that amount for the next 4 months. I do my annual renewal in June using the monthly income method - at least 65k deposited each month into a Thai bank account from a foreign source. In July & August last year I made the transfers into my Bangkok Bank account. But when Bangkok Bank started playing their silly games in September, I opened an account with Kasikorn Bank and made my next 10 transfers into that account. I did my renewal on June 23rd. I had already obtained certified bank statements from Bangkok Bank for Jul & Aug. I obtained my certified statements from Kasikorn along with bank account verification letter the day before. I didn't bother getting a Bangkok Bank verification letter being aware of the current policy. The Immigration Officer reviewed all my documents, highlighting the usual items including monthly transfers then said I needed a verification letter from Bangkok Bank. I said I did not believe they would give me one, but he said for me to go to the branch in Central Festival Beach and they would provide it. He also said I needed to update my Bangkok Bank passbook. Since it was full, I knew it would require a new one for the update. The Immigration placed a small note in Thai with my documents, stapled them all together and returned them to me. I decided to first give the a try at the branch where I opened the account. No problem in getting updated passbook. The supervisor for the counter personnel looked through my passport noting I had a retirement extension. As expected, she said she could not give me a verification letter until I deposited 800k in the account. This led to about 10 minutes of me explaining and insisting during which she made some phone calls, apparently to someone higher up. I showed her my packet of documents already reviewed by Immigration and pointed out the Kasikorn Bank provided the a verification letter with an account balance far below 800k and the bank statements from Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank which had already been reviewed by Immigration with the monthly deposits highlighted. I think it was the fact that Kasikorn had issued a verification letter that finally persuaded her to give me one, but before doing so, she held up my passbook and asked if I was going to use it for my extension renewal next year. I told her no, I would be using Kasikorn account. She then issued the verification letter. If she had still refused, I would have tried the branch at Central Festival Beach. But since I did get it at my branch, I have no way to know whether the branch there would have been successful. What really gets me is why Bangkok Bank has instituted such a policy. They should just provide the verification letter and leave it up to the Immigration Officer to determine if it was sufficient to approve the extension.
