webfact Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Can you help Jacko, the Thai temple dog fighting for his life?STAFF WRITERHUA HIN: -- Little Jacko was found left for dead in a temple in Prachuap Khiri Khan — thanks to a few gutsy dog lovers, he’s now battling for his life in a Hua Hin vet clinic with a 50/50 chance of survival. The vets have been told to do everything they can to save this poor pup, but he needs to overcome a severe case of blood parasites, infection and a leg that needs to be amputated before he’s in the clear.Tamara Johnston – a dog rescuer down in Songkhla who runs Thai Street Paws – received a phone call on Sunday afternoon from a lady called Bootsmann Malin, who’d found an incredibly sick dog in the grounds of a temple in Prachuap Khiri Khan and wanted to know what she could do to help.As he was found at the templeThe resident monks were not proving helpful in her endeavours so she had to call for back-up.After enlisting a local friend to help, Tamara and Malin managed to organise getting the dog – now named Jacko – to a nearby vet clinic for a prognosis. After an examination, it was decided that Jacko should be taken to Hua Hin if he was going to have the best chance of survival.Heading to Hua HinIn trying to arrange transportation for Jacko and Malin to Hua Hin, there was yet more drama with the vets and tuk-tuk drivers who’d brought Malin and Jacko arguing the case for simply returning the dying dog back to the temple grounds.Standing her ground, Malin refused to give up on little Jacko, and — by a sheer stroke of luck — Dr Nui, the Hua Hin vet, happened to be in the area and managed to collect Jacko and get the pup to his clinic for a thorough investigation.Full story: http://whatsonsukhumvit.com/can-you-help-jacko-the-thai-temple-dog-fighting-for-his-life/-- (c) What's on Sukhumvit 2016-06-22 Wahts
Moonsterk Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 I cannot people who simply ignore this kind of suffering. It's moral laziness.
tonray Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Jacko is only one of thousands. There are 5 or 6 dogs around the Talat Phlu BTS stop that live with a hermit, rats and other vermin in a tin shacked hovel next to the building site for a luxury condo. These dogs are covered in sores and wounds yet not one local lifts a finger to better the situation, when they crap up the sidewalk where busy commuters pass everyday, not one of the vendors who sell food right there will even think about cleaning it up, they would rather have it sit right in front of their food cart then take any responsibility. Boggles the mind the situation with dogs in Thailand.

deckard Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 I have just noticed an update on this story and it appears Jacko has past away . I know there are many other cases of neglected soi dogs but it really tugs your heart strings when you see the state of this little dog and the kindhearted people who rallyed around trying to help , unfortunately to no avail . God bless with tears in my eyes.

Truscott Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 I have been informed that Jacko has now sadly passed away.

canuckamuck Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 It was obviously a case of where being put to sleep would have been the best course of action. Feelings overcame common sense it seems.
NongKhaiKid Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 " The resident monks were less than helpful... " Nothing in it for them i suppose.
sweatalot Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 (edited) I am happy when poor animals get help but needs his leg to be amputated... I wonder if it wouldn't have been better to give him a merciful injection in the beginning to release him from a life full of suffering Edited June 22, 2016 by sweatalot
Moonsterk Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 ^ Because of a thing called anthropomorphic tendencies. The dog not not care if he sees tomorrow, all he cares about is pain and starvation he's suffering through for weeks if not months. If I saw a dog, any animal in that condition and level of pain, I would not hesitate to take it to a vet to be euthanized- and if they refused on religious reasons as I suspect the well-meaning but ultimately irresponsible vet did in this case, I'd do it myself.
Krataiboy Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 And what about the "monks" around leaving these animals dying "in piece" Pieces, if they are tigers.
luckyman Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 And what about the "monks" around leaving these animals dying "in piece" Thai Buddhism ,need their money for phones drink sex and drugs, This has happended exactly the same in Spain, during the 70's, 80's and 90's. Tourists mainly from England Germany and Holland were often shocked by the state they found local cats and dogs in. Spain has sorted out their street dog problems long time ago. It is time for Thailand to do the same.
Docno Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 It was obviously a case of where being put to sleep would have been the best course of action. Feelings overcame common sense it seems. May not be that straightforward. A couple of years back, my gf found a dog outside her shop that had been hit by a car and was in very rough shape. Spine broken (back legs paralyzed) and lots of other injuries. She managed to get other villagers to help her bring it to a vet in the city (Amnat Charoen). I was out of the country at the time, but she put me on the phone to the vet. The vet wasn't sure if the dog would live or not, but she refused to put the dog down. I suspect it had to do with some Buddhist belief about the intentional taking of life... my gf also did not want him put down. My gf went away with some pain killers and, to her immense credit, nursed 'Chokdee' back to relative health. He was indeed lucky to have been found by her. But my point is that Thai vets may not be so open to putting suffering animals to sleep as their counterparts in the west...
Ulic Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Put the dog down and put any money raised to spaying and neutering stray soi dogs. Not politically correct but pragmatic.

kmj Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 I do monthly donate to a charity savethechildren dot org just because I believe that saving a child is more important than saving a dog in a country that chooses to allow soi dogs to run wild without anyone caring.

Jedsada3 Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 I feel sad that Jacko didn't make it longer. To euthanize an animal that suffers or to give it a chance to live is not so simple to decide. If you let the religious and legal aspects by side, isn't it worth to try to give it the same feeling that you have when you run to catch the bus which is just leaving the stop and when you see it brakes and when you think the driver saw you and waits for you? Even if he stops only one second to let a car pass and then drive away without you, the short moment of hope when you thought you will catch it is a nice moment. When you are long suffering, you are thankful for every minute without pain, even if you know it will be for a short moment and it will starts hurt back soon. Animals, specially dogs, have feelings. Maybe the short moment spent in the clinic was the only moment of happiness Jacko experienced in its life! I am sure Jacko was thankful for the care he got before trespassing.
thai3 Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 I'm glad jacko went to a better place, about 3 million other soi dogs should be going with him. No action at all ever mentioned to deal with the massive soi dog infestation and there will not be until a major rabies outbreak happens.
