Private sector praises govt crackdown on human trade

BANGKOK, 1 July 2016 (NNT) – The private sector has praised the government on its efforts to crack down on human trafficking, after the United States has decided to upgrade the country on its human trafficking watchlist.

In the 2016 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, the US Department of State upgraded Thailand from Tier 3 to Tier 2. However, the US pointed out the Thai government needed to do more to eliminate human trafficking crimes.

The private sector has responded positively to the favorable report. Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said the latest TIP report would improve the image of relevant industries. The council believes that seafood exports could grow by 10% from its average value of 200 billion baht per year.

The council is also hopeful this year’s TIP report may have a positive effect on the European Union’s ruling on the country’s fishing industry. The TNSC encouraged the government to continue with its crack down on human trade so as to achieve Tier 1.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador to Thailand Glyn T Davies said the performance of the Thai government and NGOs throughout the past year proved their determination to put an end to human trafficking, though they have yet to reach the US’s expectations. The ambassador added that he personally believed Thailand could progress to Tier 1.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan affirmed the government’s intention to eradicate problems that show the country in a bad light, particularly human trafficking, illegal fishing and civil aviation safety. Gen. Prawit commented that cooperation from all sectors was necessary.

Ah, the spinmeisters are out if force on this TIP report.

All wonderful now at Tier 2!

But the actual report says:

"Thailand is a source, destination, and transit country for men, women, and children subjected to forced labor and sex trafficking. Thai victims of trafficking and some of the estimated three to four million migrant workers in Thailand are forced, coerced, or defrauded into labor or sex trafficking. Some labor trafficking victims are exploited in commercial fishing and related industries, factories, agriculture, and domestic work, or forced into street begging. Migrant workers who are trafficking victims may be deported without effective screening
for indicators of trafficking. Sex trafficking remains a significant problem in Thailand’s extensive commercial sex industry."

Oh no, this is really going to cut into the trafficking of

young Laos girls into the Thai frequented karaoke bars

that are dotted all over Thailand. Who is going to take

their place ???

Jesus! Thailand and Tier 2, get a hotel room, would you.

Reminds me at school when we had the 'Endeavour Cup'. Naughty kids winning a trophy for going a whole year without burning down the school or thumping a teacher.

Unfortunately the "human" part is not as important as the financial and face saving part

So the statement is just diplomatic garbage?

"Private sector praises govt crackdown on human trade"

NNT reporting at its best, with another truck-load of bullshit!

It is hardly the Public Sector that perpetuates the scourge of human trafficking in this country.

While there have been some Public Servants (and RTP and Military) involved, time and time again it's the Private Sector that have been shown to be the biggest abusers. And, it is the Private Sector that will be most affected by any crackdown - so, I really can't see them applauding a genuine crackdown.

". Prawit Wongsuwan affirmed the government’s intention to eradicate problems that show the country in a bad light, particularly human trafficking, illegal fishing and civil aviation safety. "

But no democratic elections, no freedom of speech, illegal detentions, intimidation, censorship and an illegal government are not going to be eradicated because Prawit believes its the right to to do. Strange that the UN etc believe otherwise but then, they are all just ignorant foreigners who do not understand Thai culture. The culture of peasants and nobility.

The state department would have done better, sending this viral around the world!

Praise is overflowing for just about everything except for the government's effort in reducing the road toll and the lawless behaviour of the community.

Just to avoid any possible confusion the photo shown on this story is of John Kerry who is the 68th and current United States Secretary of State and not US Ambassador to Thailand Glyn T Davies.
