Khmer in VN Newspaper in December

Featured Replies

The Vietnamese People’s Army newspaper revealed a timeline for its plan to publish stories online in Khmer over the weekend, according to the newspaper’s editor. The paper will start publishing in Khmer on December 22 this year.

The paper has neither consulted Cambodian experts in the Khmer language nor held discussions with Cambodia’s relevant ministries on their plan to begin publishing in Khmer, which was announced last week, its editor added, saying that publishing in Khmer will help foster bridges of friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Cambodia. Information Ministry spokesman Ouk Kimseng said he welcomed the People’s Army newspaper’s coming foray into Khmer despite having no contact with the paper’s publishers. He added that it was the paper’s right to publish in whatever language it wanted as long as it was publishing the truth.

“If they report about tourism and report based on reality, this will help promote what happens in Cambodia. But if they select only negative points to report, like some media networks in the United States, it will push people who know Khmer living abroad to see Cambodia’s status in a bad way,” Mr. Kimseng said. “So, as long as they report in a balanced way, I think that it is a gain for Cambodia,” he added.
