BANGKOK, 7 July 2016 (NNT) - The Forest Industry Organization (FIO) has announced the progress of its sustainable forest management project, explaining its strategy to develop international standards in the forestry industry.

The Forest Management Standard (SFM) was established in 2015 to ensure international standards of sustainable forest management in Thailand. The program has received participation from 10 public and private forest industry organizations. Under the program, certificates will be awarded by next month to participating forest parks to ensure sustainable forest management and transportation of wood products.

Deputy Managing Director of the FIO Pichai Rujirosesuwan said the country currently has 24 certified forest parks, 19 of which belong to the state and the remaining 5 to the private sector. Public parks cover an area of nearly 228,700 rai (est. 36,600 hectares) and private parks more than 6,600 rai. The FIO aims to increase the number of forest parks to 35 within the years 2017 - 2019.
