CHIANG MAI -- It was all smiles yesterday after a 22 year old American girl who had got lost in the Chiang Mai woods was reunited with her friend.

Shautal Chahine had been out to admire the nature of the Doi Suthep-Puy national park, reported Thairath. She was using GPS on her phone but lost her way and with her battery running low she made a crisis call to her close friend who was back in the city.

As night fell and rain threatened he called the tourist police who swung into action contacting park officials in the area.

Recognizing that the tourist could be in trouble a search party swept the area. She was found around 9pm tired and scared near the area of the temple.

A GPS signal from her phone alerted officials to her whereabouts.

Snaps for the holiday album were taken back at tourist police HQ.

Phones don't send GPS signals. So how did they find her?

True, but they do connect to the local GSM towers so can be triangulated, probably just lost in translation.

More likely they just found her through normal methods.

OK she's American, but I'm curious on the girl/lady ethnic name Shautal Chahine. Anyone familiar with it ?

Ask a tree.

Tried that but couldn't "log" on to any of it's "branches". So I'm stuck with a "nut" like you "hanging" from it.

If I type "track my phone" in google (on my PC), it shows my my phone location on google maps.

Just did it and it says, 'Accurate to 20m'

You need to be logged in on google on your PC for this to work.

Some good news and she was right to sound the alarm this could have been a very different story with no happy ending!

Conspiracy theorists on here would have been in their element. As it stands the only conspiracy at present is the name of the young lady.

And many apps/services send location data in background.
