Canadian Arrested in Bangkok after Robbing Bank in Singapore

BANGKOK – Central Investigation Bureau commissioner Pol Lt Gen Thitirat Nongharnphithak has told reporters that a Canadian man wanted in Singapore for allegedly stealing more than US$22,000 (RM88,550) from a bank using nothing but a piece of paper has been arrested in Bangkok.

The suspect was arrested on Sunday, Pol Lt Gen Thitirat Nongharnphithak said in a statement Monday, three days after authorities suspect him of robbing a Standard Chartered bank branch in the city-state using only a threatening note.

According to Major General Apichart Suriboonya, who heads Thailand’s Interpol unit, the suspected Canadian, flew from Singapore to Thailand last Thursday, arriving at 5.08pm. On Sunday, he was arrested at noon at Boxpackers Hostel in Bangkok.

The Singapore Hilton is definitely better than a backpacker's inn...

First i think it's impressive if a westerner can rob a bank in Singapore and get away with it. I wouldn't have thought so.

Then he even can buy a ticket, fly to bkk, check inn a guesthouse before finally the police comes to get him.

Why didn't they get him when he boarded the plane or bought the ticket? Was that too hard?

Probably because he did not hand over his passport to the bank so the police actually had to actually investigate and follow a trail until they could identify who it was.... by then he was out of Singapore...

If he had made it all the way to Canada he would have just been deported for trial (no death penalty - so that would not stop it). The only thing the Canadian government would require is a fair trial (Singapore system acceptable), and maybe an agreement that he serve out his prison sentence in a Canadian prison (but not absolutely necessary). He must have been very desperate or very stupid to think he could get away with it....

Robbing a bank in Singapore.......the evading capture would almost be unheard of down there.....Sing cops are pretty sharp....and then to be able to fly out undetected....to me, seems odd.

Anyway...he's nabbed now.

if you can get to BKK, you have some bad luck to get caught. but why go to the CCTV capitol?

I would have bought a used bike, then acted like bikepacker.....and just go from small town to small town and then befriend someone and stay with them. then find a way to research extradition treaties and find a way to get to that country where they can't get you.

but it's only 22,000. 2 years later and life would get really bad really fast.....

i say if you rob make it a million USD or more....and don't bring a weapon or harm anyone.

A fried spent some time in jail in Singapore back in the 70's, the food was good and he spent most of the days playing basketball.

....sounds pretty immature.....

"Boxpackers Hostel in Bangkok."

One standard up from the usual backpackers flop houses.

I wonder if he used all CAPS in his note, or maybe a scary picture?

Could have drove over the border into Malaysia

The planning for the getaway out of Singapore was strictly to the risk assessment guidelines on how to rob a bank , however the hiccup in the getaway was coming to Thailand , the impression that Thailand is a country where you can hide after a crime is only a myth , very few have succeeded ,well one or two , the RTP are always on the look out , and they generally get their man , Burmese generally fits this picture............................................cheesy.gif

They were checking the bank's video footage and compairing it to the exit videos at the Airport. They then just reported him to the Thai police and it took them a day or so to locate him. There were no security guard on duty at the bank that day.

....sounds pretty immature.....

having nothing to say, is not only immature, but

also showing no remorse.he feels he shit in somebody's

backyard and then run to mummy when the going gets hot.

assure you that he has got it all wrong. sure canadian

embassy will be extended the courtesy to visit him but

pay for his crime he must.not even PM of canada will be able to save

him.

well done the Royal Thai Police.

another testimony of asean cooperation.although

it is unclear what sort of information was exchanged

between the thai and singapore authorities the important

result is arrest of the offender.

leave alone the canadian embassy, even the pm of canada will

not be able to save him.

as far as his stance of "having nothing to say" is concerned

the investigators are well qualified to get him to tslk.

The actual words were "GIVE ME $$$". It was the all caps and bold that frightened the teller. She more use to grammatically correctness.

the irony, you loose!!!! (more Irony!!!!)
if the person feels threatened (say you point a finger gun at their head), then it becomes Aggravated. In America I know that means a much harsher sentence. Not sure on the details, but you get my point.
I heard he buried the money and it will be picked up by russian spies. the russian spies then build a super bank hacking code that allows them to make 12 billion. And in 10-years this guy walks out and flies home a millionaire!!!!!
or not

The Interpol contact in Thailand appears to be military personnel. There was no '' Pol'' before the rank. All foreigners registering in hostel, hotel, etc must be reported to the police post haste. The bib were probably notified by the interpol contact and put a gopher on the list of people registered the previous day.

How did Interpol get name , nationality, arrival time Bangkok , so quick and pass it to Thai police. good job , both ends.

Out of frying ? and into the ?

well,...we only hear about the ones that got caught because of there stupidity or sheer bad luck....the others are still here! until they are finally tracked down....!

Regards.

Imagine how surprised this guy must have been when the cops showed up...thought he was home free. I would loved to have been a fly on the wall.

The bank cameras in Singapore must have gotten some pretty good pictures for them to determine his identity so quickly and then disseminate it.

Really goes to show: you can't outrun computers.

How did he do that? He picked the lock with a piece of paper? He inflicted paper cuts on the teller?

...Sing cops are pretty sharp....

Not really….it's a very small landmass with only two or three ways out…so relatively easy to police.

Still, a jailed terrorist managed to slip out of a toilet window and evaded recapture for a year or two.

The ministers response at the time: "He is either in Singapore…..or he has left Singapore"…..no kidding.

Bunch of hilarious jokers on this thread. A teller is taught not to escalate the situation and to follow the instructions (the most they do is sound the silent alarm when the robber's attention is diverted, and throwing in cash with dye-packs) -- they will catch them later (always tend to catch bank robbers sooner or later). There are usually a lot of innocent bystanders in the bank (workers and customers) and challenging the person to the point of pulling a weapon and brandishing it raises the odds considerably of someone getting hurt or killed since it escalates the situation dramatically (people panic).

I am only surprised the bank (maybe Singapore) does not employ dye packs.... usually they go off around 10 seconds after exiting the building.

Dude, relax, I wasn't dissing the teller or the way they handled the robbery, I was making light of the wording of the article, that's all.

Good Job RTP. Aren't Singaporean Cops suppose to be better in this? How they let the robber escape customs n fly to BKK?

Local news back home now is saying times r so bad now even Ang Mohs(Farangs) have to rob banks in Singapore.

Pity the RTP can't issue an arrest warrant to arrest the son of a billionaire who killed a cop in Bangkok who is in Singapore. Maybe this case could help get the support of the Singapore Police........................if the Thai Police ask ;)
