Balance
Here is an off the wall guess: less than 10 percent of Thai small business (defined as having less than 10 employees) make a profit as would be defined using international accounting practices. To make a profit one has to know first how to calculate the gross profit, the cost of inputs, then the operating profit, the cost of making what you are selling. I have yet to meet a Thai that understands these basics. That being said, most Thais start businesses to eat; it is purely a subsistence enterprise and is done because they cannot get a job. This is especially true for Thai women who, after the age of 30 or 35 and lacking a professional degree, are locked out of the job market. The most impactful thing the government could sponsor is knowledgeable assistance in starting up these micro businesses.
