Has anyone got any parts lying about that they want to sell at a reasonable price

Looking for all components or a complete setup or even one that is broke and needs some attention

Thanks for that HG

Looked on Kaidee.com but couldn't get past the language barrier but in any case I want to do it myself

Built a PC , must be 30 years ago and cannot remember much about the science but recently had to basically strip my old ALDI Median quad core down which had a problem with WIndows 10 TDR video error and although it is working properly again it never used to handle my two flight simulators so I thought maybe I could build a gaming machine myself out of second hand parts etc that would do for the flight sims but now be outdated for the manic gamers who seems to me are always updating to the latest hardware

Are you using Microsoft Flight Sim?

Yes the 2004 and their latest X plus another that I cannot find at the moment Jay

I sort of picked up on another forum that maybe the Microsoft Sims wont work well on the latest GPUs so maybe you know of a better FlightSIm

As an Ex ATPL helicopter and airplane Instrument instructor long ago the microsoft software was just about OK for its time

I have been out of the profession for 20 odd years or so and havnt kept up with the hardware or software

Their latest X, lol. FSX came out years ago. Microsoft sold the flight sim franchise and it is no longer being developed. Lockheed however purchased the core software and are now building upon it in under the name Lockheed Prepar3d (P3D). They are marketing it for commercial/military customers, but you can still purchase the base package. Unfortunately its still held back by its 32-bit code base though.

You could have a look at X-Plane. I bought X-Plane 9, I think they are up to 10 or even 11 by now. I didn't care for 9 but haven't tried the newer ones. Preferred Microsoft Flight Sim for the environment, while X-Planers boast superior realism in flight dynamics.

The last FSX version was "Gold", which combined previous iterations and service packs, which is what I have. There is now a re-packaged, improved version called STEAM. And then the re-branded platform called Prepar3d (P3D) which came about when MS sold the code (or whatever you call it) to Lockheed Martin.

FSX ran smoothly for me on regular off-the-shelf computers, starting around 2006, and at one point, ran very well on a good quality laptop linked to a 32" television. I was really into it, for years, and finally bit the bullet and bought a serious gamer computer around 2011, good (at the time) video card, 16gb RAM, primary screen 40" Sony TV and a 19" on the side for gauges and ATC. I've got rudder pedals, 3 stick throttle quad, Cessna trim tab and yoke control console - joystick for helos and the rudder pedals make all the difference there too.

However, I came to agree with many FSX techies in the forums that much of that extra power and capability in high speed gaming computers, is wasted on FSX. I was able to follow suggested tweaks to shed some FSX load onto the video card but TBH, it was fiddly and would impact smooth flight at the expense of turning up the eye candy. You had to get it "just" right and I've spent hours fooling around that that instead of flying.

So I would agree, don't go all out on the latest and greatest gear if you just want to fly around smoothly, with medium to medium high settings and not a big load of add-ons like weather, terrain and highly refined aircraft like PMGDX.

I was very heavily involved in flight sim for many years up until recent years, I even wrote some AI traffic software for FSX, plus contributed to freeware. I built a very high end PC for FSX back in the day, i think the video card & processor alone cost me $6000, but i always hit that 32-bit limitation. I had the full Track-IR head tracking gear, etc.

In a few years I plan to get back into it, I too am looking at X-Plane which has improved a lot (payware scenery & complex PMDG level aircraft). I will be building a new high end PC for it, so i look forward to seeing where you get your parts from if you can keep us updated :)

Vedry important if using MS flight sim to use Intel processor and N Videa graphics. AMD are great machines but MSF is optimised for Intel and NVidea and they do not run well on AMD...Trust me ...I made that mistake as I bought a top AMD machine to play and got caught.

Yes thank you, your illuminating posts have shed more light on what I already thought but hadn't the info to substantiate my fears.

I have a 3D ASUS Laptop with i7 2GHerts CPU 10meg DDR with an Nvidea GTX460M GPU which I can use through an HDMI into the Telly and would be more than adequate but

I still wanted to have an entirely separate High spec desktop for some personal flying and maybe when the kids come over to use for some of their specialist software like world of warcraft etc

I will Google the latest on the Lockheed martin software but really didn't want to spend any more money on software, hence my post for maybe middle of the road Hardware that is now not in fashion but still adequate for my needs

Edit after Google;

http://www.x-plane.com/store/desktop/

After a cursory look the base package is about$59 so not too costly

Sorry n210mp, we got a bit off topic.

Essentially my original point was that FSX requirements are not that demanding because hardware has far exceeded that old software. A GTX260 GPU, 4GB RAM (all that FSX can address), and a decent multithread processor is all you need.

These specs are okay fir FSX, but if you are wanting to play more modern games then yes you will need to upgrade. Sorry I can not advise Thai sources or prices.

Thanks for that Aussie69, I thought so to because the kids told me that my laptop isn't up to the job for their games through an HDMI but adequate for my Flight SIMs etc however I have the bug again and will be building a new High end gaming machine (I hope) of course with older hardware, having said that I see that the Nvidea GTX 960 with 4M can be bought for under 9K from Lazada and also Invadit
