CCCIF holds year's first meeting on IUU issue

BANGKOK, 15 July 2016 (NNT) – The first meeting of the Command Center for Combatting Illegal Fishing (CCCIF) this year has shown confidence Thailand’s Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing situation will improve in the eyes of the European Union (EU) after constant work by the government.

CCCIF’s first meeting this year, chaired by head of the CCCIF committee on human trafficking and forced labor Adm Bongsuk Singnarong, was attended by public and private sector representatives, members of the public as well as individuals from Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Arts. The meeting was held under the theme “Developments for Sustainable Remedying of IUU Fishing” and sought to pool all ideas and perceptions on the IUU situation in Thailand. The meeting was presented with a range of studies and research pieces to help in finding better solutions to the problem.

Attendants pointed out that the EU’s decision to keep its Yellow Flag against Thailand after its most recent review of fisheries in the Kingdom was due to persisting issues of human trafficking. However, Adm Bongsuk reminded that the US recently adjusted Thailand up from Tier 3 to Tier 2 on its Trafficking in Humans Report, indicating the government’s work has been effective.

He stated that the government has continued to seriously deal with human trafficking in the fishery sector and has been acknowledged by the EU for its effort. He said with new recommendations from the EU, Thailand will likely receive welcome news in January of next year.

America only wants a friend. And is frightened. Pathetic response.

"...The first meeting of the Command Center for Combatting Illegal Fishing (CCCIF) this year has shown confidence Thailand’s IUU fishing situation will improve in the eyes of the EU after constant work by the government..."

Thailand has been warned to take action on a number of occasions over the last year! The most recent warning was in June (http://www.euractiv.com/section/global-europe/news/eu-warns-thailand-over-illegal-fishing/).

Despite this, amazingly, we are told that the CCCIF has just held its first meeting for the year.

If they simply think they can wish this problem away they are going to be in for a big surprise!

Perhaps, they China may offer to help out?
