Cambodia mobile phone subscriber base drops nearly 12%

Featured Replies

The number of mobile phone subscribers in Cambodia has declined by 11.5 percent over the last year. According to regulators, the decline is due to a rebalancing after the market reached a saturation point of over 100 percent penetration, the Phnom Penh Post reports. “Market demand was fully satisfied, as it reached its peak, so it was not surprising to see the number of subscribers decrease a bit”, said Im Vutha, director of the regulation at Telecom Regulator of Cambodia (TRC).

According to TRC data, Cambodia had a total of 19.2 million mobile phone subscribers at end-June, down from 21.7 million a year earlier. Cambodia has a population of 15 million inhabitants, which indicates that many subscribers own more than one mobile line.

TRC data also indicates that internet use continues to grow, mainly boosted by increasing smartphone ownership. At end-June, Cambodia also had 88,000 fixed-line internet subscribers, compared to 77,000 a year earlier. The number of mobile internet users grew to 7.2 million at 30 June, from about 6.2 million a year earlier.
