Thais Kill One, Injure Two Loggers

Featured Replies

One Cambodian man was killed and two were injured after Thai authorities opened fire on a group of alleged timber smugglers in Thailand’s Chanthaburi province on Wednesday night. Major Sareth Piseth, the deputy police chief of Phnom Proek district, said the group of seven Cambodians was apparently attempting to smuggle rosewood out of Thailand when the authorities discovered them.

“They illegally crossed the border to cut rosewood in Thailand for sale,” Maj. Piseth told Khmer Times. “They were shot by Thai solders while they were transporting rosewood from the Thai side toward the Cambodian border. They were trying to escape arrest,” he added.

The man who was fatally shot was identified as Battambang province’s Teng Sorl, 35. His body remains in Thailand awaiting repatriation to Cambodia where it will receive a funeral in his hometown of Prami village in Phnom Proek’s Bour commune. “The Thais shot a Cambodian man to death at the place and another two men were seriously injured, and were arrested,” Maj. Piseth said, adding: “Another four people managed to escape from the shooting and returned to their homes.”
