CHONBURI: -- A shocking and grievous assault on a one and a half year old baby in Chonburi has revolted the Thai public.

The child called Bai Bua is in hospital after being raped, suffering two broken bones and being burned on the mouth. Doctors rate her survival chances as only 50-50, reported tnamcot.

Both mother and step-father have been arrested. Piya Phosang, 21, has admitted to rape and is also charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm. Mother Nit, 21, a Cambodian national is charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm.

Both appeared on national TV this morning. When reporters pressed the step-father if he was high on drugs or alcohol he said that he was not. He told police that he raped the baby because he needed sex and only stopped when she started crying. Both apologized for what they had done.

Nong Kham police were alerted to the crime on Tuesday night by staff at Laem Chabang Hospital who said that they were treating a Cambodian girl aged 1 year 5 months who had a broken right arm, broken left thighbone, ruptured genitals and a swollen mouth consistent with being fed hot water.

The mother told police that she and Piya lived on a construction site in Sri Racha, Chonburi. On Thursday last week she went out to buy lunch and when she returned she saw that her daughter's genital area was wounded and there was blood coming from her vagina.

On Sunday an argument developed between the mother and step-father. She said that Piya stamped on the infant's stomach then grabbed the child's head smashing it into the floor. He then grabbed her arm and pulled it from its socket. She managed to escape the room with her daughter but still did not take her to hospital.

She said that on Tuesday her baby daughter would not stop crying and was not moving and she fed her boiled water mixed with cold water. She saw that shortly after Bai Bua's mouth swelled up and marks started appearing on her chest. She then took her to hospital.

Piya admitted rape when interviewed by police. He said that he wanted sex but did not ejaculate after the baby started crying. The mother has since claimed that the incident with the hot water was not intentional.

Provincial police chief Amphon Buarapporn has visited the injured girl who has now been transferred to Chonburi Hospital. Doctors there say the child has only a 50-50 chance of living due to the serious nature of her injuries.

For the people against the death penalty, please read this story and have a rethink.

What would it achieve? The man and woman both are either insane or dangerously stupid and should certainly not be allowed to have children, but that applies to untold millions of so-called parents on the planet.

Do you think either of them would have been deterred by the death penalty? I dont.

Sterilising stupid people at puberty would be much more effective and would solve many of the world's other problems too.

I wholeheartedly agree.

It even beggers belief such a story can be real although highly suspect all true. It's just the circumstances are so bizarre you can't even wonder how such events can be performed by a sick individual for his own pleasure.

This creature should get the death penalty imposed upon his person save the world from his insane genes being passed onto any future siblings.

This post is disturbing to say the very least.

"Both apologized for what they had done."

So, everything is OK in the "Land of Scum".

A word for the baby:

"Your life has only started and is already so sad.

It's not your fault.

You did not chose to be born in such a sad country.

I hope your next life will be a better one and far away from of Thailand."

Of course everything is NOT "OK" if these allegations of heinous child abuse are substantiated by a jury of their peers BUT I object to you referring to Thailand as the "Land of Scum". If you have such a low opinion of Thais, may I politely and most respectfully suggest - you know what you can do. <wai>

Substantiated by a jury of their peers? He admitted it all, why would they need a jury?

On the other hand the death penalty is a sure guarantee that he would not repeat this despicable act.

I do agree with you to a large degree, it does seem to be the trend that people least able to raise children properly breed the most. The human rights people would have a field day with the idea of forced sterilisation. Although I do see it's merits, and I do not think this applies only to Thailand.

Yes; you're right Alwyn. Thank you for correcting me. I guess all that's required is the judge's gavel strike.

The crime is heinous without a doubt Sir. I guess I was offended by the "Land of Scum" name calling, which I kind of thought was unnecessary embellishment. Thank you.

For those morally opposed to the death penalty, the depravity of the crime is not a factor in their reasoning, the oposition is based on a elief in keeping members of society, through their collective government action, from sinking to the level of these individuals by commiting similar acts. The cognitive disonance between saying murder is wrong and then having the state kill someone is great.

As to the case at hand, no, I'm not in favor of killing either of them. Long jail sentences and/or chemical castration for one or both I could get behind, however.

The story was horrendous but still enacting the death penalty as law is not the answer. No person of sound mind would commit such an act. And if you believe the mentally ill should be put to death then perhaps we should start with all the children with down syndrome.

As an English teacher I see lots of young Thai fathers bring their kids to school, they love their kids, they would kill for their kids. This scumbag obviously has some serious mental illness. This sort of abuse happens in America, Australia, England, anywhere. I'm against the death penalty but if they did decide to end this bastard's life I wouldn't be protesting too much.

I do not believe the mentally ill should be put to death just for their unfortunate predicament.

But anybody committing a crime as heinous as this, can have no defense whatsoever.

Why you brought the unfortunate people with down syndrome into the equation, I am not sure.

I made the connection because he is obviously mentally ill. And we do not know the environments, situations or developmental challenges he faced to become this way. Usually, individuals who behave like this were sexually abused as children as well.

Is killing him going to act as a preventive measure against similarly mentally ill individuals? If not, then the execution is purely for revenge, which I guess some people prefer.
