Labor Minister Ith Samheng asked the new Australian ambassador yesterday if her country could take in seasonal workers from Cambodia, prompting disappointment from a number of civil society groups hoping the government would make more of an effort to create jobs here. At a meeting with Angela Corcoran, Australia’s new ambassador to Cambodia, Mr. Samheng said Australia was the perfect place for Cambodian workers, and told reporters: “In the meeting, I asked Australian officials to provide work opportunities for Cambodian people in Australia through projects as seasonal workers.
 

“The labor market conditions in Australia are good, with higher wages and better working conditions.” He said companies were already sending workers to Australia, but it was through an “unofficial” system.
 

The two governments will now try to set up the framework for a deal to send workers on a yearly basis, he said. “I have sent a letter to the Australian government, but we have not had a response yet,” Mr. Samheng added.
