Aussie Refugee Deal Dead in the Water

The new Australian ambassador to Cambodia praised the Kingdom yesterday for taking in refugees from the island nation of Nauru, where Australia has controversially held refugees against their will in appalling living conditions in an effort to stop others from seeking asylum there. Despite local and international condemnation of the detention centers on Nauru and the deal between Cambodia and Australia, which saw the Kingdom receive $40 million in exchange for taking in any amount of refugees, the Australian government has been steadfast in its support for the measure, with some government ministers going so far as to call it a success.

The facilities have been criticized by human rights advocates, with repeated cases of alleged abuse, rape and malnourishment happening to those detained there, according to an Australian Immigration Ministry report. Angela Corcoran, the new Australian ambassador to Cambodia, met with Foreign Minister Prak Sokhon at the Foreign Ministry yesterday to discuss a variety of issues, including aid packages and further bilateral cooperation.

Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said the ambassador thanked Cambodia for its “highly valued” adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding on the settlement of refugees in Cambodia signed in 2014. The Australian coalition government negotiated the deal in secret, with current Immigration Minister Peter Dutton hailing it as a success earlier this year, saying that since detaining most refugees on Nauru and only offering them the chance to reside in Cambodia, they have seen a decrease in the number of boats carrying migrants from Indonesia to Australia.

Here we go, the highly qualified refuguees can not get a foodhold in a poor country where there are a lot of opportunities for willing, abe and capable people. Best to send them back where they came from. I am always surpised to see from which countries people try to flee. I am also surprise to see that many people in poor countries remain in the country and try to make a living, like Cambodians.

The biggest problem a refugee can face is attempting to explain why they did not seek asylum in the very first country they came to after exiting their former country.  The UN refugee convention is specific in that it states the first country a refugee makes landfall in shall offer that refugee asylum.  Seems many refugees want to 'cherry pick' just exactly where they want to live.  Their second problem is when they attempt to enter a country under false pretences or lying or by destroying all their personal documents.

How many people have been relocated from Nauru to Cambodia? The last reports, about 6 months ago, suggested there were only two that been relocated. Presumably, for this to hit the headlines on Thai Visa,  there has been a huge influx of persons since that time. It'd be interesting to know.

It's doubled to the fantastic success story that Dutton is so proud of to 4.That's right $US10 million per person. It was that successful that 3 went back to their original country to a uncertain future. One poor bloke is left and funding to help him is finished soon.Hun Sen would be laughing all the way to a Swiss bank at the stupidity of Dutton,Bishop and Abbott and the Lying Nasty Party. This is a disgraceful way to spend taxpayers money, never mind the morality about it.Shame Australia shame.
