BANGKOK: - The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will summon the assistant abbot of Wat Paknam Phasicharoen temple to acknowledge charge of tax avoidance for his Mercedes Benz vintage car which was later transferred to Somdet Chuang, the abbot of the temple.

DSI deputy director-general Pol Maj-Gen Suriya Singhakamol said he has signed a warrant to summon Phra Tanakit Supavo, or known widely as Luang Pee Pae, assistant to the abbot of Wat Paknam Phasicharoen for acknowledgement of tax evasion after DSI discovered that he paid lesser tax for the vintage car imported from the United States.

He said the Excise Department has assessed that the tax payment of the car by the assistant abbot and found it was much lower than the actual tax that he had to pay.

The Excise Department has reassessed the tax to be paid plus fine for belated tax payment at 6.86 million baht in  total.

He said the assistant abbot must report to the DSI for acknowledgement of the charge on August 16 at 10.00 a.m. to acknowledge the charge.

The problem vintage car is now owned by Somdet Chuang, acting Supreme Patriarch whose appointment as Supreme Patriarch was halted pending clearance of the charge by the DSI.

The delayed appointment sparked outcry from some activist monks and followers who threatened to hold massive protest.

What are they going to do?Say please please please come we want to speak to you.

Time for another monk to play merry go round.

A merry go round indeed.

The monk won't answer the summons,    the DSI will huff and puff about what they will do next with little intent to do so and when the PM,  Justice Minister etc are asked to comment they'll take cover behind   '  existing laws are adequate  '  and the issue can be left to the officials dealing with it.

You would have to think that someone is getting the wrong end of the deal here.

First, we are told by The Nation (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/Somdet-Chuang-may-not-be-charged-with-tax-evasion-30292191.html?src=ilaw), that Phra Tanakit Supavo (and NOT the acting Supreme Patriarch) buys the Benz for ฿4million. THEN, if you believe the report, he just gives it away to the acting Supreme Patriarch! They are either very, very good friends, or this is a case of the Thai patronage system on steroids.

Now, as if by higher intervention we're told by the Broadcaster we can trust, that Phra Tanakit is to be slugged ฿6.86 million in back taxes and fines on something he no longer owns – boy, talk about a two-time loser.

The acting Supreme Patriarch has done all right out of this though - he gets a "gift" valued at ฿4 million (no, make that now ฿10.86 million), and it would seem that he gets exonerated from any suspicion in this saga.

So, even better for him, there should now be no impediment to Prat yu submitting his name as the next Supreme Patriarch. And, best of all, nothing is said about any tax he might be liable for as the recipient of the "gift".

Meanwhile, while it’s all good for the Supreme Patriarch, to add to the intrigue it appears that DSI has decided to press charges against three more individuals for alleged involvement in the "scandal" (http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/three-indicted-somdet-chuangs-car-scandal/).

Maybe, the Supreme Patriarch could have said something from the very beginning (http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/most-senior-thai-monk-draws-controversy), and all the controversy, and the effort by officials, could have been avoided!
