Approximately 2,800 athletes, including a mother with a stroller and child in tow, participated in yesterday’s third annual Angkor Empire Marathon, with Australia’s Jeff Chaseling finishing the full 42km course around the famed temples of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap in an impressive 2 hours, 49 minutes and 57 seconds. He was followed in second place by China’s Fang Yu, who crossed the finish line over 20 minutes later, while South Korean Chenho Yoon rounded out the podium with a third-place finish.

Erina Nakai secured a Japanese win, triumphing in the women’s event with a time of 3 hours, 19 minutes and 34 seconds. She was closely followed in second place by South African Karen Sobrino and Britain’s Sophie Clarke. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism and president of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, outlined the role of the marathon in promoting tourism in Cambodia on Saturday night.

“The NOCC has designed a Sport Development Plan and initiated various sports events to attract national and international tourists in low season. The organization of the annual 42km full marathon in August is a magnet which can attract thousands of national and international tourists,” said Mr. Khon. “Apart from raising tourist numbers, the race also raises funds to support Kantha Bopha Hospital, Angkor Hospital for Children and also our Cambodian Red Cross.”
