No State of Emergency: PM

Prime Minister Hun Sen stressed yesterday that Cambodia is a country fully at peace, and is certainly not in a state of emergency. Speaking at a ceremony marking the near-completion of the new Koh Thom Bridge in Kandal province, Mr. Hun Sen announced that all people in the country were able to travel freely and without government intervention.
 

“Cambodia has not declared a state of emergency, nor is it in a state of emergency,” he said. “Because our country has already had peace.” The premier did not say what had prompted him to make these latest comments, only that he wanted to remind people that there was no longer the fighting in the country that plagued much of the past 30 years.
 

He stated that Cambodia is now moving forward and that there is no current political crisis or deadlock. Political analyst Kim Sok yesterday disagreed with Mr. Hun Sen’s assertions, pointing out that the current political tensions in the country are having a negative effect on stability, and public confidence in politics.
