Better water situation in Chao Phraya river basin

BANGKOK, 10 August 2016 (NNT) - Director-General of the Royal Irrigation Department Suthep Noiphairote has confirmed the water situation of the Chao Phraya river basin has improved due to the rainy weather.

The director-general on Tuesday said the total water volume of all 33 dams nationwide was currently around 9.3 million cubic meters, slightly lower than last year. The total water volume of four main dams, including Bhumibol, Sirikit, Kwae Noi and Pa Sak, was 2.6 million cubic meters, higher than the same period three years ago due to water saving measures.

The official added that rain water was the main source of water for more than 10 Rai of farmland in irrigated areas during periods with a lot of rain. As for the Mae Klong river basin, cultivation can begin when rainfall increases. The department expects that 15.9 million Rai of farmland will be cultivated by the end of August.

Mr. Suthep also confirmed that all farmers nationwide would have sufficient water for use during the dry season this year and the next. The department would zone cultivated areas according to the water situation in September this year, he said.

the real picture is here (link), most dams are under 50% (Bhumibol 33% Sirikit 44%) and across all dams there is still more outflow than inflow. hopefully good catchment rain will continue

Come October there will be the usual knee jerk reaction to flood mitigation.

After a good start to the monsoon, the past month or two have been cloudy-but-mainly-dry, up here in Chiang Mai.

So I wouldn't rush to announce that things are fine, just yet ! :(

I very much doubt it as ALL the dams are still fairly low and certainly won't be full to over flowing this year.

Maybe by October next year but as there doesn't seem to be a government that interferes and overrides the dams agency they can control the levels.
