Opposition party members plan to submit a raft of draft laws and amendments to the National Assembly on a range of issues from whistleblower protection to reducing corruption, they announced at a press conference at their headquarters yesterday. Senior opposition member Son Chhay explained that the law to protect whistleblowers was needed to ensure that any possible cases of corruption at government ministries or national institutions were brought to light, citing failings of the current anti-corruption law in protecting those who reveal wrongdoing.

“The country needs to have the law to ensure the participation and promotion of transparent management in order to reduce corruption,” he said. Mr. Chhay added that the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) also plans to propose that the National Assembly amend two existing laws related to judicial reform, including changes to articles concerning the roles of judges and prosecutors.

“These laws have already been prepared, we are discussing and they will be approved by parliament in the near future,” he said. He said the CNRP was also preparing a third set of revisions to the draft access to information law, as the current draft was “unacceptable.”
