Men Arrested over Axe Murders

Two men were arrested on Tuesday afternoon for allegedly murdering two fellow laborers with an axe in Stung Treng province’s Sesan district on Sunday. The two bodies were found lying in tall grass inside the forest in Sre Kor Thmey village, several kilometers from the Lower Sesan II hydropower dam project. Major Doung Vichet of the provincial police confirmed the story, but could not give details because he said only the National Military Police spokesman could speak to the media.
 

Eng Hy, a spokesman for the National Military Police, said the arrests were made on Tuesday afternoon and the murder was the result of a grudge. The two suspects were later brought back to the scene to re-enact the murder, he added. “The arrests were made at 3:30pm yesterday. According to the investigation, the murder was motivated by a grudge,” he told Khmer Times yesterday, declining to say what the grudge was over.
 

Mr. Hy also declined to reveal the suspects’ identities, citing official police procedure as the men were still being questioning. Local media identified the two suspects as Vin Da, 21, and Sam Chanthoeun, 23. The victims were identified as Khun Sokban, 23, and Phorn, 25.
