Cambodian embassy officials in Thailand are now assisting migrant workers in Thai prisons by providing lawyers for them. Embassy officials also announced they are looking for relatives of a Cambodian man who died in Thailand late last month to take his body, which is being kept in a hospital there.

Chum Sounry, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the Cambodian embassy in Thailand reported that nearly 60 Cambodian workers are being detaining in Thai prisons and another 21 workers were recently released, with some returning to the Kingdom. He said the Cambodian embassy intervened for the workers who had been arrested and detained in prison for entering Thailand to work illegally. A total of 78 workers were arrested in June, but 21 were released after embassy intervention.

“The 57 workers are detained in difference prisons in Thailand with 19 in Narathiwat province on charges of illegal entry and working without permits. Another 34 were arrested by police in Chonburi province and accused of working without permits and the other two are detained in prison in Ayutthaya province,” he said. Mr. Sounry said that at the request of the Cambodian embassy, Thai police working on the case agreed to question the workers again and have a hearing as soon as possible.
