They can't find any clue which can lead them to political activists. 2. Much easier for police to nab and blame some poor southern revolutionary soul in order to collect the reward. 3. Politically better for the PM to blame the south rather than admitting it may have been people protesting his form of government. The "end" here is determined by what someone wants it to be. Facts, evidence and reality have no particular role in that process.
dageurreotype
Is Thailand also 'special' in that any terror attack is never claimed? In the UK the IRA were quick to own their campaigns, same with all and any ISIS related. I'd've thought that would be the point of a terror campaign is to bomb the shit out of anyone until the government accede to their demands. Bizarre. Boooom! 'Wonder who that could be?' bark
If the Southern Problems moves North to Bangkok; you can write off Thai Tourism. There have been bombs, almost everyday, in the 3 Southern provinces for the last 6-7 years. I think over 3,000 people have died. Many of them police , soldiers, and teachers and kids. And we never hear about it on the international news. But if they bomb Bangkok even once a month; in a mall or sky train station. Tourism is done. sujoop
Not a leap for the mastermind via a middleman to direct local elements using Malaysian phones (a very convenient and willing patsy to cover one's tracks). We've seen over and over again Police investigations tend to reach for the lowest hanging fruit and/or scapegoat (ala Koh Tao for just one example). The Erawan Shrine investigation similarly seemed to take advantage of a 'too' convenient back-story and patsy (and also similarly, no one including the Uighur's took credit for it). Bomb attacks beyond the deep South are not new, starting with eerily similar M.O. on NY Eve 2006 in BKK with 8 bombs following Thaksin's ouster:http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2007/01/09/politics/politics_30023641.php The real mastermind in the latest cowardly attacks was much more likely not happy with the referendum, targeted only Southern provinces who voted for it (and on a Royal day to add salt) and moreover appears bent on de-railing tourism (thus the economy) and destabilising Thailand in advance of a difficult transition period. Not a junta fan-boy but given many past incidents and patterns to present day and with much more likely coming in transition, the Army is unfortunately/regretfully highly needed during this time period to maintain a civil society and to preserve law and order - or, pin your hopes on the Police and good luck with that. candide
Junta huggers please take notice of the new position of the government on this matter as can be read in the "other newspaper". While evidence tends to point at Southern insurgents, they have been manipulated by a mastermind, i.e Gen Prawit said that "southern militants might have been hired to carry out the attacks" (guess to whom he was thinking). This is the new position to defend in TVF Edited August 16, 2016 by candide
sujoop
^^Certainly a possibility. Also very similar to the 8 BKK bombs on NY eve 2006 following Thaksin's ouster, so definitely not new. Great way to hide one's tracks. We'll know for SURE if/when all heck breaks loose following confiscation of billions in 'family' assets after the imminent rice scam ruling is handed in. Similar to 2010 right after Thaksin was confiscated 46 billion in ill gotten gains and all heck broke loose. Again, not a junta fan-boy but given many past incidents and patterns to present day and with much more likely coming in a tense transition period (which someone seems to want to acerbate) the Army is unfortunately/regretfully highly needed during this time period to maintain a civil society and to preserve law and order - or, pin your hopes on 'tomato' Police to maintain law and order. phycokiller
no one will get the blame for this, if its southerners which is very likely it wont be made public. in my 15 years in Thailand the only bombers they ever got were the ones that accidentally blew themselves up, other then that, they never solved a single case, except erewan but they couldnt find the people that organized that either. Enoon
It would make the job of the separatist groups of the South so much easier if the Thai state would just tear itself apart in a frenzy of accusation, reprisal, internment and ultimately, civil war. Claim responsibility and demonstrate the impotence of the state? Or don't claim, knowing that the dysfunctional state will not be able to resist the temptation to use the incident as a pretext to fabricate more rope for itself?
