Tourists on Koh Samui island warned of box jellyfish

SURAT THANI, 16 August 2016, (NNT) - Tourists and other people on Koh Samui island have been warned of box jellyfish after many had been injured by their poison earlier this month.

A vinegar service center was set up in Koh Samui's Maret community and posters were erected to warn of the poison of box jellyfish. Tourists and others were advised how to provide first aid to those who might possibly be hit by box jellyfish which show up around the island from July until November.

Samui Island Tourism Association vice president Krissana Phromkoh said that vinegar have been prepared for use as first aid to the injured before transferring them to a hospital. She added that tourists should refrain from swimming in the sea at night.

The box jellyfish with two- to three-meter-long tentacles might fatally strike swimmers in the sea with a venom which can quickly reach one’s heart and nervous system and kill the victim in two to 10 minutes.

Box Jellyfish

It just gives one one great confidence that they're there in force between July through to November. Hopefully, during the other months there aren't any box jellyfish floating about with Alzheimer's?

This is the first I"ve heard this year.  Surely with "many injured" it would have made the news somewhere or other? Where has this been reported? Which beach has been effected?  Any more precise news on these events?

Maret is the sub-district where Lamai is located.

As the article states at the moment it has only been injuries, normally the news isn't interested in what is going on until someone dies.

They are also starting to show up in Thong Nai Pan on Koh Phangan, four people stung a couple of days ago.
