Returning to Cambodia a month after fleeing to Thailand over safety fears relating to the murder of analyst Kem Ley, twin brothers Chum Hout and Chum Hour have vowed to continue their fight against the construction of the Don Sahong hydropower dam in Laos. Announcing their plan to return on Thursday after receiving assurances from the UN and representatives from an unnamed “powerful country,” the twins crossed into Cambodia at the Poipet International Border Checkpoint yesterday morning.
 

Chum Hout told Khmer Times that he and his brother had received assurances from the government about their safety and stressed that their environmental work would continue as before. “I work not to serve any political party, I work only to protect the environment, fish and Tonle and Mekong waters in Cambodia,” he said.
 

He added that he would write a letter to the Interior Ministry, further stressing their purpose, which he described as being “for the benefit of the nation.” Am Sam Ath, a technical supervisor at human rights group Licadho, said the twins’ request for additional protection was a practical decision.
