BANGKOK: -- The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission will inform all mobile phone service providers to refund their customers who use pre-paid SIMs and, later on, return their SIMs with the remaining unused phone fees, said Mr Takorn Tanthasit, secretary-general of the regulatory body, on Tuesday.

The NBTC’s move follows a widely-circulated report in the social media of a pre-paid phone user, Mr Thanongsak Sukhanin, a director at NBTC, who said he returned his pre-paid SIM to a service centre of a mobile phone service provider and asked for a refund of the leftover fee in the SIM but was rejected by an official.

Thanongsak reportedly asked to see the manager of the service centre and, after some discussion and wait, he was finally refunded.

He also reminded other pre-paid SIM users of their right to reclaim their money in case they want to return the SIMs and there are still money left there.

Takorn said that pre-paid SIM users should have their money back in 30 days after they return the SIMs which is in accordance with the standard of the service contract.

Any users who are denied a refund can call 1200 to lodge a complaint, he added.
