Monk Hits Two in Car, defrocked

Featured Replies

A monk has been defrocked after crashing his SUV into two motorcycles in Sihanoukville on Monday night, injuring both drivers, according to provincial police. Twenty-two-year-old Yu Soti had driven his Toyota Highlander from Kampong Speu province to Sihanoukville when he crashed into the two motorcycles in the city’s Bey commune, Preah Sihanouk provincial traffic police chief Ey Sokha told Khmer Times.

“It happened at about 7pm. The monk was driving the car and crashed into the motorcycles. He did not use alcohol because he is a monk,” he said. Mr. Soti told police he lived at a pagoda in Kampong Speu province’s Samraong Tong district, although when contacted by police, the abbot did not recognize his name, said Mr. Sokha.

“The two victims received pretty serious injuries. We cooperated with the provincial Buddhist monk authority to take action. He was defrocked and we are preparing to bring him to court, most likely tomorrow.” According to his identity card, Mr. Soti was born in Pailin province and was ordained last year at Kiri Samrithchey pagoda in Sala Krao district.
