Police again complain Pattaya CCTV cameras don’t work

PATTAYA:--Pattaya police again are complaining that the city’s multimillion-baht CCTV system is in such bad shape, they can’t use it to catch criminals along Beach Road.

Police claimed Aug. 16 that beachfront cameras don’t work, leaving them without an important crime-solving tool.

For example, on July 28, a tourist had his valuables snatched and when police asked to see the camera footage, it appeared that none of the cameras from Central Pattaya to Walking Street were working.

Complaints about faulty and poorly maintained cameras aren’t new. Almost exactly a year ago to the day, Banglamung District’s chief ordered 1,600 cameras be checked to ensure they worked following last August’s Bangkok shrine bombing.

Pattaya City Council members previously had indicated that as many as 90 percent of the devices were broken.

New Pattaya administrators appointed by the military junta said last week that, in fact, the cameras themselves work, but frequently suffered network-connection failures.

Surasak Chantasomboon, director of the Technological and Communications Department, apologized and said cameras cannot record any footage if there is a network failure. He added that the network was down at the time of the July 28 crime cited by police.

He said the computer system suffered a virus attack, but has since been fixed.

Surasak cited other factors that also have interrupted the network, such as power failures, flooding and transformer explosions.

They just need to cut down all the remaining trees and increase the football stadium floodlighting  two fold

then the remaining 2 working CCTV cameras will easily capture all crimes along the 4 kilometer beach front  :w00t:

Given the current security situation this is indeed outrageous.  Heads should roll (but they won't).

the biggest thief in this town are the RTP itself... so no wonder the cctv doesnt work.

Can some brave reporter ask why no UPS for the network and cameras. Seems also a failure to protect the computers from a virus, how was it introducted. No virus protection. My belief is Surasak Chantasomboon, director of the Technological and Communications Department, is full of excuses and BS. These systems will tell you when there is a loss of video signal, why wasn't  this acted upon?

Here, here.  Pattaya crime will never diminish till police corruption is cut out.  Every bar I frequent has to pay police protection money ranging from 2,000 to 24,000 per month or false charges will be brought.

And we keep hearing that tourist safety is paramount. Though, at the time when needed, no CCTV operational, yet a stack of excuses are available.

You are, of course, correct, we only "hear" never see anything done, why, because nothing is ever done.

Multimillion-Baht CCTV system that is not functional.

Why ?

network-connection failures

virus attack

power failures

flooding

transformer explosions

How about "Made in China"??? :gigglem:

I guess the only camera which is working properly here is this from Google Streetview cars. I saw one of them last week.

I thought Thailand was making a real effort to protect tourists, but again its only Thai talk ,

wanna catch criminals? put 20 officers 50 meters apart on beach road from dusk to dawn, give'em some coffee and donuts and problem solved!
