Fourteen Cambodians were freed from Thai jails and repatriated yesterday, after serving up to six years in Thailand for illegal logging, police said. Touch Ra, chief of Cambodia-Thai relations at the Choam Sangam International Checkpoint in Oddar Meanchey province, said all the Cambodians had spent time in jail for illegally crossing the border into Thailand to log luxury wood.

“Some people were put in jail for eight months, some over one year and some two years, it depended on their crimes,” he said, noting that some had been arrested in 2010. “We just received them from the Thai authorities, collected their names and got some information from them. Now they have returned to their homes.

“Among those 14 Cambodian loggers, some were arrested in 2010, and some in 2014, some in 2015, and others in 2016,” he said.   He named the 14 as Sot Mao, 34, Doeun Sambath, 35, Noeun Phoeun, 34, Loeun La, 32, Hour Mao, 32, Horn Khai, 30, Ean Touch, 21, Sun Chea, 35, Choeung Son, 60, Seng Rorn, 24, So Piseth, 53, Chhorn Sokean, 26, Li Mao, 35, and Khom Khem, 38.
