Vietnamese Massage Parlor Owners Jailed

Two Vietnamese women were convicted yesterday by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court and sentenced to 18 months each in prison for running an illegal prostitution ring inside their massage parlor in the capital’s Meanchey district in January.  Presiding judge Thlang Phadeth said 36-year-old Nguven Thi Nhieu and 33-year-old Nguven Thi Dao, the owners of the massage parlor, were charged with “procurement of prostitution with aggravating circumstances” under articles 284 and 288 of the Penal Code.

“The court sentenced them to 18 months in prison and fined them four million riel [about $1,000] each,” she said.  The women were arrested after municipal anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection police raided the establishment on January 24, the judge said, adding that seven Vietnamese masseuses ranging in age from 17 to 25 had also been caught, but were later released after being educated.

A number of used and unused condoms were also confiscated from the place. According to a January police report, Ms. Nhieu and Ms. Dao allowed their staff to have sex with clients for 50,000 riel (about $12.50) to $20 per time and in exchange, received commission of 10,000 riel (about $2.50) to 20,000 riel.
