The Foreign Ministry is investigating reports that 18 Cambodian fishermen were recently arrested in Indonesia for illegal fishing. According to ministry spokesperson Chum Sounry, Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn has instructed Cambodia’s ambassador to Indonesia, Norng Sakal, to look into the reports and arrange their release if the reports prove to be true.

“Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn instructed Cambodia’s ambassador to Indonesia to check the reality of the situation and the health of all laborers,” Mr. Sounry told Khmer Times. He said the 18 workers, who he described as trafficking victims, had possibly been arrested while working on a Thai-owned fishing boat, but said the details, including when the arrests happened, had yet to be confirmed.

“The ambassador was told to make contact with Indonesian authorities to ask them to release those Cambodian laborers who are the victims of human trafficking,” he said, adding that the ambassador had also been authorized to cooperate with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). He said Mr. Sokhonn also instructed the ambassador to cooperate with the IOM in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta to organize and facilitate the men’s repatriation as soon as possible.
