BANGKOK — The DSI is trying to explain how an official accused of illegally issuing hundreds of land deeds in the south died in its custody after its explanation — suicide — was challenged by an autopsy.

The DSI initially said former Phang Nga land official Thawatchai Anukul died in his cell early Tuesday after he hanged himself from a door hinge using his socks. After a forensic examination suggested otherwise, the agency said he died of liver damage caused by improper CPR.

Hospital director dismisses possibility that CPR may cause abdominal bleeding or liver rupturing

Mongkut Wattana hospital director Dr Rienthong Naenna has insisted that the performance of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on former Phang-nga land official Thawatchai Anukul by an emergency medical team did not cause abdominal bleeding and ruptured liver in the patient.

Maj-Gen Dr Rienthong posted a long message in his Facebook page to clarify the death of Thawatchai in an apparent defence of the hospital and its emergency medical team against a suspicion that the administering of CPR on the former land official might have led to abdominal bleeding and rupturing of the liver of the patient who was thought to have committed suicide by hanging himself with his cotton socks in the detention cell of the Department of Special Investigation on Tuesday night.

In the message, the director said when Thawatchai was brought into the emergency unit of the hospital, he was administered with CPR during which time his heart had stopped functioning but it was brought back to life temporarily but his condition was critical.

At about 2.40 am, the patient was moved to the critical care unit and was, again, administered with CPR but to no avail and he died at about 4.45 am.

Throughout Wednesday until Thursday, Dr Rienthong said he was bombarded with questions from reporters about the actual cause of Thawatchai’s death with one particular question about whether CPR resulted in suffocation, abdominal bleeding and ruptured liver, causing the patient’s death.

He said that the CPR performed by the hospital’s emergency medical team was in accordance with professional standard which involved giving oxygen to the patient, assisting his breathing and pumping of his heart to bring him to life.

He insisted that it was impossible that the CPR would cause the patient to suffocate but, instead, would help solve the problem of lack of oxygen.

The director further pointed out that liver was not on the position where CPR was administered and it did not cause abdominal bleeding or liver rupturing.

A medical examination cast doubt on the explanation for his death after it revealed that he died of blunt force trauma and suffocation. Thwatchai also had abdominal bleeding and a ruptured liver.

Very common for blunt force trauma to be present in hangings, especially if the "suicide" is accompanied by a severe beating.

10 Billion Baht in deeds?

Who would have been the final recipient of thst money? This dead guy?

The worst part about this headline is all the guys who cry every suicide is a hidden murder are going to use this incident for the next 20 years.

It is alleged that Thawatchai received money from certain influential people to issue bogus land deeds.

A bit of digging has found this story - http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/encroached-properties-in-sirinart-national-park-in-phuket-to-face-legal-execution-to-evict‏/ - and this story - http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/court-hands-heavy-jailterms-phuket-illegal-land-grabbers/ -  a good story today in the unmentionable that say these were some of the land deeds he illegally issued.

Note the last line of the second story, "Sirinart park chief Mr Kittipat Tharapibaan said that the two defendants were merely representatives of the real mastermind who engineered and financed the land grabbing for profiteering."

One wonders if this "mastermind" ordered the silencing of Thawatchai...

Considering it is accepted by all non-rose-colored-glasses-wearing scholars that the RTP and the RTA are the two largest mafia-like organisations on the country it is hardly surprising that his silencing occurred while in police custody...

One way to prevent getting caught in less than honest activities is to remember the time honored saying:

"Dead men tell no tales".

Yep, think of the testimony that this guy could have provided, said mastermind could've gone down for a very long time (in a country where the judiciary is fair and impartial).

Except now a new tale teller has been created -- the hired killer of Thawachai.

Its just as likely that guards beat him up trying to get him to divulge where some of the money from the sales are stashed.
