8 1/2 hour stopover in Amsterdam.

Featured Replies

Considering a 8 1/2 hour stopover in Amsterdam with my 4 yr old 1/2 Thai 1/2 European daughter.

Arrive 9am, depart 5:30pm.

Holding EU passports, I presume we can get out and leave the airport?

Is the main airport near the city? Easy to get into? Things to do... canal tour, bus tour, etc etc.?

Thanks for any info or recommendations.

Yes, you can. there is a train station at the airport and trains leave every 10 mins to Amsterdam CS(Central Station). There are lockers to store your bags. Tickets are around 10 EUROS for a return journey. Train ride takes around 15 mins. For the canal tours, there are several next to the train station, in front and and also to the right...

Things to do on an 8.5 hour stopover in Amsterdam?

And there's a Heineken brewery tour if you get thirsty.

What date are going to be on Schiphol? I ask this, because there are slow work actions planned by ground personel.

this can mean that you have to check in earlier for your next flight than you had planned.

make sure that your lugage is put through to your end destination, so you avoid this problem.

At this moment it's still not clear when they will start the slow work action.

Schiphol has a lot of stuff to do at the airport, also for kids.

Check out there website.

Question about this. I believe you need a special card to use the trains in the Netherlands, so you buy this card, add a balance to it for travel and when you want to leave the Netherlands you have to send that card per snail mail and they will reimburse you by transferring the remaining balance to your bank ? True or not ?

You can pay cash at the ticket counter.

Amsterdam is our favourite hub for European travel.

Great site for information gathering is I Amsterdam http://www.iamsterdam.com/en

Best for seeing the canals is the canal bus https://www.canal.nl/en/canal-bus
