KMITL scraps design of Wiman Pra-in to end controversy

BANGKOK, 15 September 2016 (NNT) - The controversial design of ‘Wiman Pra-in’ has been removed from the Chao Phraya River land mark project after netizens claimed it was a replica of Russia’s Crystal Island Tower.

A design team from the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) decided to scrap the design for a new Bangkok’s promenade landmark after critics said it was not original.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sakul Hovanotayan, head of the design team, said in response to criticism that his team did not copy the design of Crystal Island Tower in Russia. Some internet users even claimed that Wiman Pra-in also bore a resemblance to a landmark located in front of a train station in Nagoya, Japan.

The team’s spokeswoman, Assoc. Prof. Antika Sawatsri, said the decision to withdraw the design from the project was to end the controversy while insisting that the team did not model Wiman Pra-in after the two landmarks.

BANGKOK: -- The alleged copycat design for the riverside Viman Pra In building has been quickly yanked from the riverside revamp project amid widespread accusations that the design was a copy of Russia’s Crystal Island Tower.

Those pointing out the similarities between the two buildings included Thailand’s star architect Duangrit Bunnag, who we interviewed about the controversy.

The architects from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, who submitted the design, have removed what was supposed to be the signature building in the government’s riverside promenade project.

Thai's are good at this, I can remember a Thai who plagiarized a foreigners thesis which caused all sorts of stink

I don't care if they build it or not. All I care about is whether it was copied or not. The boss said they didn't. Integrity and honour restored.

I believe you, Prof. Antika... ? ?

Damned, caught :bah:

Well Norman Foster gets no WP (Thai jobs for Thais), so what choice did they have :cheesy:

Will the famous new skyscraper designed by a German architect be demolished?
