Thais Reopen Border to Agriculture Goods

Featured Replies

The Cambodia-Thailand border in Pailin province temporarily reopened to various Cambodian agricultural products on Friday after a meeting between provincial authorities on both sides of the border, according to the deputy provincial governor who led the Cambodian delegation. Deputy provincial governor Eang Vuth said the issue had been resolved temporarily with Thailand demanding that some conditions be met regarding quality and hygiene.

“They agreed to let us export into their country. The agricultural products including mangoes are imported normally now, but in the meantime they demanded some conditions be met. They protected their interests and we also protected our interests,” he said. “They demanded the Ministry of Agriculture sign a contract with them regarding the 18 agricultural products sold as a whole with a certification of quality and hygiene.”

Although the National Police reported the decision to close the border to Cambodian agricultural products had been made a month ago, Mr. Vuth said the ban had only been enforced for one week. The ban had also included corn, cassava, pepper, pumpkin and longans, he said. “[Today], the Ministry of Agriculture will negotiate with Thailand on this matter to ensure complete legality. I have asked the Thai side for their understanding because they also export a number of fruit to Phnom Penh,” he added, saying the main problem was with mangoes, which are now in season in Pailin.
