Venice canal comes to life amid noisy protest against large cruise ships

VENICE: -- Venice was the scene of a colourful and noisy protest on Sunday as a small armada of boats turned out to draw attention to large cruise ships which are allowed to pass through the Italian city’s canals.

A Thompson Celebration cruise ship became the object of the demonstrators’ disapproval. Yet at 33,000 tonnes, it was actually one of the smaller liners to pass down the central Giudecca canal each day.

The protesters – residents and environmentalists – argue that increasing cruise ship traffic damages the fragile city, one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations.

In 2013 a law was passed banning the largest ships, of over 96,000 tonnes, from crossing the canal – and the number of smaller ships was limited to five a day.

But the legislation was overturned at the end of last year, since when protests have been on the rise.

Venice is always under this problem. In 1999 they decided to close the Canal for avoid this problem and let the water out with special issues.

fair enough. venice is in even more danger of sinking that bangkok. would place sits on very old wooden piles. would think the local authorities would try to protect the place for as long as possible not just look at the short term revenue stream.

I totally agree with them. These Freeking ocean high rises are ruining the Greek Islands too and the locals are devastated. Some of them carrying more than 3,000 passengers who disembark for a 1/2 day visit and stampede these small beautiful places are literally destroying  them. So I understand the feelings of the Italians here.

The cruise ships in Venice are comparable to the Chinese tour buses in Pattaya - ban them all.
In no way do I mean the beautiful city of Venice is comparable to Pattaya (s*** hole) just the number of hordes of unwanted tourists.
