Govt confident number of tourists will be higher than last year despite crackdown on zero dollar tours

BANGKOK, 30 September 2016 (NNT) - Despite the recent efforts to suppress "zero dollar" tours, the Thai government is confident that the number of tourists this year will be higher than the previous year.

Deputy Prime Minister General Thanasak Patimapakorn presided over the meeting aimed at solving zero dollar tour problems. He revealed that the move to crack down on dodgy tour agents would not reduce the number of tourists traveling to Thailand.

Gen Thasasak added that the number of tourist arrivals since January this year remained high and would topple the figure in the previous year by the end of December, 2016.

The crackdown has been carried out indiscriminately, he stated, adding that tour price ranges, which have been developed as a guideline for tour agencies, will be revealed on October 8th.

They will come in standard, gold and premium pricing plans to ensure fairness. Gen Thanasak is also set to meet with Chinese officials on October 14th to discuss tourism related matters.

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said the overall tourism situation in Thailand remains positive. Both Chinese and Thai tourism authorities have been working closely over matters concerning tour prices as well as tourist safety.

TAT must have had a bit of a lie in this morning,  their daily confident forecast is somewhat late today!

When the government speaks you hear the sound of inevitability: the tourist numbers will be higher

"Lies, damned lies and statistics"?

yes because cracking down on anything in this country does not seem to work. either that or TAT will just inflate the number of arrivals regardless.

Confident this, confident that... There's never a lack of confidence here!

It's Tantamount to deception a never ending amount of fudged figures conjured up by TAT marketing to enthrall us all with candy coated bullshit.

They have probably engaged my former accountant, he always made the figures fit for me

If a large cruise ship docks in Lam Chabang, you correct the spelling, and the people are taken to Pattaya for the day and return to the ship at night is that a zero dollar tour as well ?

The way this military government treat foreigners with all kind of paranoid tracking ideas and misstrust, they are in my opinion not worth a single visitor.

As far as I know, I have obeyed all of the Thai laws and regulations in the 13 years I have lived here in retirement.  In that time I have brought about 24 million bahts into Thailand for the purchase of property, which I do not own, plus living expenses and yet somehow, I am beginning to feel like a persona non grata and a probable criminal in the eyes of the police and Immigration.  Meanwhile the Tourist Authority of Thailand spends a fortune on staff and on advertising gimmicks in an attempt to entice more tourists to come here.  Am I missing something?
